Like a lot of people
in their thirties I remember voraciously consuming all of Roald Dahl's books as
a kid. The BFG was definitely a favorite with its tales of giants, dream
catching and snozzcumbers.
The Spielberg film
version is a faithful recreation of the book, perhaps too much so as it does
drag at times across its near two hour run time. However Mark Rylance gives a
wonderful interpretation of the BFG, bringing childhood imaginings to life perfectly.
Nonetheless this is
good solid entertainment and the Buckingham Palace scene, which reduced me to
tears, is worth the admission on its own. Thankfully even Spielberg avoids the
sentimentality of some of his other film,
although the John Williams score is not very memorable either, and it is perhaps overly long of a kids movie.
