The House of Silk - Anthony Horowitz (2011)

Anthony Horowitz was amongst my favourite writers when I was teenager and Sherlock Holmes was one of my favourite characters. Anyone who read any of Conan Doyle's stories in their early teens must admit to fantasising (and subsequently failing) to being like Sherlock Holmes, with his incredible logic and skills of deduction. So when I noticed that Horowitz had been tasked by the Doyle estate to write an official Holmes book my interest was piqued. I was not disappointed, the author maintains the spirit and style of Doyle whilst updating the prose for modern audiences, but never to the cost of authenticity. The Victorian world that Horowitz creates is as real as anything from Doyle's pen. With Holmes stories there are always two stars, Holmes himself and whatever devilish plot he finds himself trying to untangle. This book does not disappoint on either count with an intricate plot that will keep you guessing and riveted to the end. If you want a page turning thriller you can't go wrong with this.
