The Albany Theatre
in Deptford for a local theatre plays host to some remarkable circus style
shows and none more so than Hyena. Performed by the newly formed group Hyena
sees the all female trio engage in some remarkable acrobatics all using 3
massive hoops known as Cyr wheels in which they roll around inside as if they were the spokes of a
wheel.
The hoops offer the
opportunity for a dizzying array of acrobatic tricks as the trio roll around
the stage. Highlights included a scene where one of the acrobats rolls around in a hoop
whilst somehow managing to simultaneously sing a haunting song, and some pretty incredible upside pull ups to get on to the top of the rings. The climatic scene was equally impressive as three ended up rolling around in the same ring in a pretty good impersonation of Leonardo Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man.
Whilst they are
undoubtedly talented acrobats this entertaining show is let down by the
somewhat poor choreography, which is a shame as with a better story to tell this
troop could be something really, really special.
