Wow, Ryan Reynolds
really has found the character that suits his talents and who would have
thought it would be a totally unhinged, subversive, fourth-wall breaking, R rated comic book character
with a face like an 'advocado'?
Deadpool 2 continues
exactly where the first one left off. The comedy is as dark as ever, the
opening scene is a gruesome attempted suicide. You do have to admire Deadpool for dealing with issues
that other comic book movies dare to tread. Once again Ryan Reynolds is as brilliant as
ever in the Spandex clad titular role, he seems so made for the role that part of thinks he might actually be Deadpool in real life, it is perhaps no surprise that he also has a writing credit for his contribution to the script.
This time around we
follow Deadpool as he tries to protect a troubled mutant teenager called Fire Fist from
both himself and a time-travelling assassin from the future called Cable, played
with a stoic menace by Josh Brolin. Cue fourth wall breaking real-life references from Deadpool to
both the Goonies and the fact he plays Thanos in the same universe. To help protect Fire Fist Deadpool decides to recruit a team to help battle Cable which he decides to call
X-Force to ensure gender neutrality. Needless to say, X Force is not a wild success.
The references come
thick and fast in this highly enjoyable film, so fast, in fact, it is impossible to catch
them all in one sitting. What's particularly entertaining is Deadpool's continued willingness to break the fourth wall to great effect, telling one character who does a terrible
job of delivering his lines that there is 'no more speaking parts for you Buck'
and autographs a cereal box whilst in full Deadpool costume for a kid with a Ryan Reynolds signature. The
action scenes, following on from the first film, are equally brilliant, continuing the awesome set piece slow-motion approach that worked so gloriously in the first movie. There are also a few scenes in this film that
will go down in movie lore, in particular, the 'baby legs' pastiche of Basic
Instinct will take its rightful place in the hall of movie infamy.
All in all Deadpool 2 is pretty much the same as the Deadpool which is no bad thing as that film was excellent as is its follow up. Must Go.
